What I Learned When My Son Left For College

He’s only been gone a week but it feels like much longer. I had originally planned to not see him again for at least a month, to let him acclimate and make sure he didn’t come home too soon. I didn’t want to be accused of being the “mother” in the word “smother.”  But it’s been a tough week for him. There is a lot more partying than he was expecting and he is trying to stay true to what he believes. When he texted on Monday, “Can I come home this weekend?” I couldn’t text back “yes” fast enough.

I asked what special dessert I could have ready for him, told him to bring his laundry and readied his room with fresh sheets. I am crazy about this man-child of mine and I can’t wait to have him back under my roof and in my arms. And it’s only been that one week.

This whole experience has given me a new perspective on heaven. I’ve got a Father waiting on me and he is wild about me. He’s wild about you too. He sees how hard things are in this place that isn’t really home. We are here because there is still work to be done, special tasks for each of us. There have certainly been dark days when I have asked him if I can come to Him yet and so far the answer has been no.

But He is waiting and when the time is right and my work here is done, I am going home. He has a room for me and an unimaginable feast planned. And because He knows me better than anyone, He doesn’t even have to ask if there should be chocolate!

It will be more glorious than I can ever imagine. I will be with my Father, under His roof and in His arms. I will truly and at last, be home.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.  My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.~John14:14

“The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for His son.~Matthew 22:2

  1. Love this thought for the day! I've felt that way too when thinking how glorious heaven will be and how hard this life can sometimes be. BUT HE does have work for us to do and part of that is bringing others along with us to this glorious place.
